Our Town: Emily Webb
These costumes show the journey Emily takes though all three acts of Our Town. From the sweet, budding innocent pink of her Act 1 dress, her blossoming, pure white wedding dress, to her confined, withered up, black suit which she sheds in Act 3; she grows and dies within her outfits. Her life cycle is styled after a flower. From a bud in Act 1 to a blossoming flower in Act 2 to a dried up and dying flower. The white roses in her wedding veil stand for her happiness and her love while the white roses on her Act 3 hat stand for sympathy and humility. She feels bad for the living and what they don’t understand. The cherry blossom lapel Emily wears in Act 3 stands for being educated and wise. She knows and sees all now that she is dead but she sheds the black outfit with the lapel to a white outfit to remain oblivious and stay out of the affairs of the living.
